FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the purpose of Dispatches from Quarantine?

Our goal is to introduce teens and young adults to the historical records made by young people during challenging times in the past and use them as a way to prompt observation, reflection, and documentation of the Covid-19 Pandemic.

What makes this project unique?

This project grows out of twenty years of studying young people’s diaries from the Holocaust and other conflicts in the 20th century. Through these written records, we gain unique insight into young people’s experiences in times of crisis and understand the issues, challenges, and questions that especially concern them. This, in turn, helps us craft the right questions for young people at this moment, ones that are grounded in history and that encourage them to reflect meaningfully on their lives in order to create records that will matter in the future.

Who is behind this project?

We are a group of educators working with a media producer and graphic designer to make sure that this project is historically valuable, educationally sound, and socially responsible. To learn more about us, please see here.

Who participated in Dispatches?

We designed this project for middle, high school, and college-age students though we invited anyone under the age of 25 to contribute. We collected 300 submissions from young people around the world.

Can I still contribute to Dispatches from Quarantine?

The official submission period for Dispatches from Quarantine has ended. However, if you would like to submit something to preserve in the archive, we would be happy to accept it. There is still a chance that we will add your work to our online gallery. Feel free to navigate to the SUBMIT page where you can fill out the form and share your work with us. Thank you!

Who owns the material?

The project participants retain ownership of their work. We asked them to give us non-exclusive permission to preserve it and offered the option to share it if they wished.

Why is there one permission form for children younger than 13 and a different one for those 13 and older?

According to the Children’s Online Protection Privacy Rule, if you are under the age of 13, a parent or guardian must give permission for you to submit materials online. The permission form can be found here. If you are 13 or older, you can sign the permission form yourself here.

What about my privacy?

On our permission forms, we offered the opportunity to decide whether the participant wanted to be identified, and, if so, how. If they did not give that permission, we used the information only to catalogue the work in the archive and to contact the submitter in the event that we wish to ask permission to use it. We will never share any identifying information that we collect in the course of processing submissions with any third party. We honor requests for anonymity unless something in a submission causes us concern for the writer’s safety or the safety of others.

Can we contact Dispatches from Quarantine with questions, comments, or feedback?
